N. N. Pisharody Biography

N. N. Pisharody was a legendary film director, playwright and screenwriter of Malayalam, best known for the movies – Ammu and Ninamaninja kaalpadukal. He has also published his short stories in magazines. Apart from plays, Hiranya Garbham, Sarppa Sathram, Ivideyo Naalathe Sooryodayam and Vishathan Kaavilinnarattu are among his famous screenplays. He remained unmarried throughout his life. He passed away on 30 August 2008 at Kanjoor. Throughout his life time he wrote 17 novels. An off-beat movie Vellam was based on one of his novels. He spent more than 30 years in the film industry as a screenwriter and director.

 

He was born in 1926 at Methala, near Perumbavoor in Kerala. He completed his schooling in Paravoor. His graduation was completed at Serhampur, Bengal and economics was his main subject. He was an avid reader since his younger days and he started writing during his teens. His first short story was published in Kottayam while he was studying in high school classes. After that he regularly contributed short stories to many leading Malayalam magazines for many years. He also wrote many plays, apart from film scripts. Kure Swapnangal, Kure Vanambadigal – was his first published novel and it was published in Kaumudi weekly. Later on he published his novels as episodes in many leading Malayalam magazines.

 

He started his film career as an assistant director for Telugu and Tamil movies. Later he turned to a producer, director and scriptwriter and associated with entertainment industry for more than 3 decades. He turned an independent director with the movie - Ninamaninja Kalpadukal, which bagged National award for best regional movie (Malayalam) for the year 1963. The movie was a commercial success too.
