Murli Manohar Joshi Biography

Murli Manohar Joshi is an Indian politician belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. He has served as the president of the party during the period – 1991-1993. His views on Indian socio-politics and his affiliation with the RSS make him a social leader of the party. He is deeply influenced by the life of great Indian leaders like Veer Savarkar, Shri Guruji and Deendayal Upadhyaya. He has also served as the home minister for 13 days in 1996.

 

He was born on 5 January 1934 at Nainital of United Provinces in British India. Joshi had his early education in Chandpur and completed B.Sc. from Meerut College and M.Sc. from Allahabad University. Professor Rajendra Singh was the faculty there. He did his doctorate from Allahabad University based on his doctoral thesis was Spectroscopy. After completing his PhD, Joshi started teaching Physics at Allahabad University. It was during this time when he came in contact with the RSS in Delhi. He was a young leader then. Cow Protection Movement in 1953–54 and the Kumbh Kisan Andolan of UP in 1955 are the major protests in which he took part as a youth leader. He was jailed for a couple of years during the Emergency period of Indira Gandhi’s government in the mid-1970’s.

 

He was elected Member of Parliament from Almora in 1977. Joshi was elected General Secretary of the Janata Parliamentary Party, when the first non-Congress government came into existence in India. But after the fall of government, his party came out of Janata Party in 1980 forming Bhartiya Janata Party. He has served as the Union Human Resources Development minister of India under Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1996.
