Mullappally Ramachandran Biography

Mullappally Ramachandran is a senior politician from Kerala belonging to Indian National Congress. He currently serves as the Member of Parliament representing Vadakara constituency. A 7-term Parliamentarian, he is the son of famous Indian freedom fighter Mullappally Gopalan. He is one of the strong congress politicians from Kannur, the district fully dominated by Communist Party of India. He has been elected to parliament five times consecutively to the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Lok Sabha from Kannur defeating LDF. Got elected to Lok Sabha from Kannur Constituency in 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996 and 1998, he later stood as a candidate from Vadakara twice in 2009 and 2014, which he successfully won.

 

He was born in Kozhikode on 7 November 1944. He got involved with politics during his college days in the 1960s. He became Youth Congress President of Kozhikode district in 1970 and served as President, Kerala Pradesh Youth Congress for a term of 5 years since 1977. He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1984 and since then he represented Kannur in Lok Sabha for the next consecutive 4 terms as well. When he became MP of Kannur for the first time, the constituency was in extremely backward condition in development. Since then he was able to bring about several developments in Kannur during his 5 terms as MP. He was appointed as General-Secretary of Pradesh Congress Committee by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

 

He served as the Joint-Secretary, All India Congress Committee (Indira) during the period 1988-95. Elected to Lok Sabha in 1991, he served as Union Minister of State, Agriculture and Cooperation (1991-1993) followed by Member of Committee on Industry (1993-1996). He got elected as General Secretary, KPCC in 2000 and as Vice President in 2005. During his 6th term as MP, he served as Minister of State (Home) in 2009 in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. He currently serves his seventh term.
