Mukul S Anand Biography

Mukul S Anand was a successful director and producer of Bollywood. Mukul died of a heart attack at the age of 45 in September 1997 when he was doing the shooting of much anticipated movie Dus, starring Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan together after their blockbuster hit Saajan in 1991. This huge budget movie was never finished or released later, though its patriotic song sung by Shankar Mahadevan – Hum hai Hindustani was immensely popular.

Mukul was the nephew of veteran film scriptwriter Inder Raj Anand and cousin of actor and director Tinnu Anand. Mukul S. Anand made his debut as a director in the year 1984 with suspense thriller, Kanoon kya karega, inspired from a Hollywood movie.  His second movie, Aitbaar was also a Hollywood inspiration released in the year 1985. But as a film maker his first critical success was Sultanat released one year later. This movie happened to be the debut movie of actress Juhi Chawla and it was for the first time when Dharmendra and Sunny Deol shared the same screen space. ‘Main balwan’ released very soon was immensely popular for its rock numbers like Halla gulla and Rock n Roll.

However his first box office hit was Insaaf released in the year 1987 that starred Vinod Khanna in leading role. It happened to be the comeback movie of this actor too, after a few terrible flops. The magic was repeated once again with Mahasangram where Madhuri Dixit was paired opposite Vinod Khanna, in the second movie. This movie is also known for the memorable performance of Aditya Pancholi.

He directed Amitabh Bachchan’s big movies – Agneepath, Hum and Khuda gawah in a row. Khuda Gawah is one such significant movie that needs special mention. It’s after this movie that Amitabh Bachchan went for a short hibernation so as to return back with double power and strength that he carries now also. Khuda gawah was not a big success and he too, took a short break to return back with multi-starrer Trimurthi. It was the last completed movie of Mukul, released in the year 1995. As a director he has won Filmfare Best Director Award for Khuda gawah in the year 1992, his last movie with Big B.
