Mukri Biography

Mukri was one of the successful comedians of Hindi cinema during 50’s and 60’s. He along with Johny Walker and Mehmood form the trio of comedians in the golden era of Hindi cinema. Starting from 1945 Dilip Kumar movie Pratima, in career spanning 50 years, he acted in over 600 films. He can be named a legend of Hindi cinema who has seen all the progressive achievements of Hindi cinema since middle 40’s. He is remembered most for the movies - Mother India (1957), Kohinoor (1960), Milan (1968), Bombay to Goa (1972), Gopi (1972), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Lawaris (1981) and Sharabi (1984). His unique acting skills, mannerisms, flexibility, perfect timing and toothless smile made him an iconic figure among the comedians of Bollywood cinema.

Mukri alias Muhammad Umar Mukri was born on 5 January 1922, Alibagh in India. Before entering movies, Mukri was working as a Qazi. Veteran actor Dilip Kumar was Mukri’s schoolmate. Mukri’s debut happened through Pratima where Dilip Kumar played the lead role. He helped Mulri to get this role. Mukri had been working with the studio as an assistant director. It happened to be the directorial debut of actor P. Jairaj also. The movie was released by Bombay Talkies when Devika Rani was its owner. He is regarded as one of the funniest actors of Indian screen.

Mukri was married to Mumtaz and they have 5 children - 2 daughters Naseem and Amina and three sons Nasir, Faruk and Bilal. Naseem Mukri, daughter of Mukri is a screenwriter and dialogue writer of present Bollywood who wrote the successful script of Dhadkan. She has also written dialogues of movies Dhadkan and Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya as well. Mukri impressed audiences by his fantastic comedy shows and took a break from the film industry during 90’s. He passed away on 4th September 2000 at the age of 78.
