Moti Nandi Biography

Moti Nandi was a famous and accomplished writer associated with Bengali literature. He was a legendary sports journalist who authored several sports-based novels. He became famous through his novels, and has also contributed in the form of children’s literature. He has also published many sports articles for publications. One of the popular Bengali novelists of 20th century, he received Sahitya Akademi Award in 1991. He was also a recipient of Ananda Purashkar in 1974 awarded by the ABP Group to writers belonging to Bengali literature. Moti Nandi passed away on 3 January 2010 aged 69. Most of his works were published by Ananda publishers.

 

Many of his popular novels have been adapted to silver screen. Three of his novels based on sports have been adapted to film scripts. In 1984, the popular film director adapted his novel, Koni to a Bengali film which was well received by audience and met with critics acclaim too. The movie starring Soumitra Chatterjee and Sriparna Banerjee also bagged National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment for the year 1984. Another novel "Striker" (1978) was also adapted to silver screen. It was Bengal’s first authentic sports film. In 2012, Nandi’s novel ‘Bicycle Kick’ was made to a Bengali feature film. The film was directed by Debashis Sen Sharma.

 

Kolkata based writer Moti Nandi was born in Kolkata on 10 July 1931. He completed his studies from University of Calcutta. He gained popularity as a sports journalist as well as writer. His writings taught millions of youngsters to love cricket. He died in 2010. Baobab, Bijolibalar Mukti, Duti Tinti Ghor, Nakhatter Raat, Jibonto, Golap Bagan and Shada Kham are some of his published novels.
