Mohitlal Majumdar Biography

Mohitlal Majumdar was a renowned writer from Bengal. He was a noted poet, essayist and literary critic. He was one of the first Bengali poets to pose a challenge to Tagore by criticizing his literary canons. Bishorini, Svapan Pasari (1922) and Smara Garal (1936) are his noted works. His works include poetry and essays. He was a member of the Shanibarer Chithi group. Many of his works have been included in the syllabus of schools and universities.

 

He was born at Kanchrapara village in Nadia district of Bengal in the year 1888. He graduated in the year 1908 and started his career as a teacher at Calcutta High School. He continued his profession as a teacher for the next twenty years before he joined University of Dhaka as a lecturer. He retired from service in the year 1944. He started his literal career as a poet publishing his poems through "Manasi" magazine. Later he contributed his poems to many literary magazines. He used Arabic and Persian words in his poems and his poems had pleasing rhythms. Some of his early poems have the influence of Tagore’s works.

 

Swapan Pasari, Smargaral, Adhunik Bangla Sahitya, Bangla Kavitar Chhanda, Kavi Shri Madhusudan, Sahitya Bichar, Bangla O Bangali, and Kavi Rabindra O Rabindrakavya are among his contributions. Though he started off as a poet, later he migrated to literal criticism. As a literary critic, Mohitlal attempted to set standards and often bring forth the problems associated with the world of words. He worked in University of Dhaka in Bangla and Sanskrit Department till his retirement. He passed away on   26 July 1952 aged 63.
