Mohan Agashe Biography

Mohan Agashe is a veteran theatre artist and film actor. In 1996 he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contributions to Indian theatre. In 1995, he received Filmfare nomination for best actor in supporting role for the movie – Tridev though couldn’t win it. He has also acted as Maganlal Meghraj in Bengali telefilm, Feluda based on stories by Satyajit Ray. Most recently he played Indian Prime Minister’s role in Malayalam flick, The King & the Commissioner, where superstars Mammootty and Suresh Gopi played lead roles.

Mohan’s full name is Mohan Mahadeo Agashe and he was born on July 23, 1947 in Bhor, Maharastra. He studied in B. J. Medical College, Pune for his MBBS and PG degree in Psychiatry. He worked in government hospitals at first and later moved to Psychiatry. Currently he works as a Professor of Psychiatry at the B. J. Medical College and Sassoon Hospital in Pune. Agashe was a founding Director of Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health. Later he moved to FTII where he worked as director general during the period - April 1997 to April 2002. In 1998, his project to improve the mental health education and service was accepted by Indian government and used to make new policy on mental education by the Government of Maharastra. He later served as advisory to the government regarding the same subject, mental health education.

Agaste loved acting and takes occasional breaks to appear in movies and plays. He has appeared in critically well acclaimed movies of 70’s and 80’s like Nishant, Manthan, Rihaae, Paar, Mashal, Bhumika, Gandhi and Akrosh. Later he appeared in supporting and character roles in Mississippi Masala, Dil aashna hai, Patang, Hu tu tu, Zor, gaja gamini, Aks, Agni varsha, Paap, Rang De Basanti, Jism 2, Apaharan, Asambhav, Ab Tak Chappan, Gangajal and Tridev. He has appeared as police officer in many noted movies.
