Mehul Kumar Biography

Mehul Kumar is a Bollywood director, producer and screenwriter best known for the movies – Krantiveer (1994), Marte Dam Tak (1987), Kohram (1999), Tirangaa (1992), Kitne Door Kitne Paas (2002) and Mrityudaata (1997). He is known for producing movies with patriotic themes and his association with Nana Patekar is equally famous. Perhaps he is best remembered for Krantiveer released in 1994 which gave Nana Patekar both Filmfare and National award for best actor. After 2004, he took a break from Bollywood and returned back with Krantiveer: The Revolution in 2010. The movie was a sequel to Krantiveer. However the movie couldn’t replicate the success of Krantiveer. Lahu Ke Do Rang (1997), Aasoo Bane Angaarey (1993) and Paap Ki Aandhi (1991) are other noted releases. He has directed numerous successful Gujarati movies in the 1980’s before he completely switched to Bollywood in the 1990s.

He was born in Mumbai in 1949. He made his directorial debut with bilingual Janam Janam Na Saathi (Gujarati) and Phir Janam Lenge Hum (Hindi) in 1977. The movie was produced by famous Bollywood producer, Tahir Hussain. Throughout 1980’s he was mostly associated with Gujarati cinema and has directed 18 movies, delivering many box office hits. His second Bollywood project was Anokha Bandhan (1982). Marte Dam Tak (1987) which starred Raj Kumar, Govinda and Farah became a golden jubilee hit establishing him as a successful Bollywood director. Success of Tirangaa, Jungbaaz, Nafrat ki Aandhi and Krantiveer just followed it.

Krantiveer was a different take on patriotism and the movie also starred Dimple Kapadia, Atul Agnihotri and Mamta Kulkarni in pivot roles. With early 2000’s after a string of flops, he took a break from the industry. In 2010, he came back with ‘Krantiveer: The Revolution’ launching his daughter, Jahan Bloch in Bollywood. He is also remembered for the movie, Mrityudaata (1997) which marked the comeback of Amitabh Bachchan after Khuda Gawah in 1992.
