Mehboob (singer) Biography

Mehboob was a musician and playback singer of Malayalam movies during the era of 1950s and early 1960s. He was also known by the names, H. Mehboob and Mehboob Bhai. He has given numerous golden hits to Malayalam and was one of the most successful names of the industry, before the golden era of Yesudas and Jayachandran actually started. His maximum hit songs were recorded by composers M. S. Baburaj, K. Raghavan, G. Devarajan and R. K. Shekhar. Most of his comic and folk songs were penned by P. Bhaskaran. He used to perform in Mehafils and yet was not career oriented. His last days were spent in miseries and died nearly an impoverished man fully addicted to alcohol. He passed away in the year 1981.

Mehboob was born in Mattancherry of Kochi in the year 1925 in a poor family. His full name is Mehboob Khan. His childhood days were spent nearby Bengal battalion military camp polishing shoes while his mother did cleaning jobs. But it helped him to pick up songs of different languages including English from British soldiers. Gradually he got close with music and used to sing at various ceremonies conducted by rich families in Kochi. He didn’t even own a house and stayed with his friends. Yet through the language of music he earned admirers. His early songs were written by Mepalli Balan and Nelson Fernandes, with that special Mattancherry flavor. But they were not recorded.

It was Pankaj Mullick, who recognized Mehboob's singing ability for the first time who recommended his voice for many Rafi concerts. He was introduced to playback singing by music director Dakshinamoorthy who was in search of a new voice for the movie, Jeevita Nauka. The movie was the first super hit movie of Malayalam and he sang, "Akaale Aarum Kaividum" which was an instant hit. After that he didn’t turn back and sang many memorable hit songs like - "Vandi Vandi Ninne Pole Vayaril” of Doctor, "O Rikshawalla" of Odayil Ninnu, "Manennum Vilikkila" of Neelakuyil, "Enthoru Thontharavu" of Moodupadam, "Ee Chiriyum Chiriyalla" of Zubeidaa and “Kandam Bechoru Kottanu Athu Mammad” of Kandam vacha kottu.
