Marri Chenna Reddy Biography

Dr. Marri Chenna Reddy was an Indian politician from south India who has served as the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh twice. He is one of the youngest Indian chief ministers till now and he became the chief minister for the first time at the age of 30. He has also served as the governor of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. He was serving as the governor of Tamil Nadu when his death happened in 1993. He also served as chief minister of AP from 1978 to 1980 and from 1989 to 1990. He was one among the influential leaders who initiated Telangana movement of Andhra Pradesh in the late 1960s. He held the professional MBBS degree.

 

He was born in 1919 in former Hyderabad State. He completed MBBS degree in 1941. Since college days, he has been actively involved with politics and founded Andhra Yuvajana Samiti and Students Congress. He has also served as an editor for a weekly and wrote articles for magazines and dailies. He was the General Secretary of Andhra Mahasabha in 1942. In 1946, he became a member of the Standing Committee of the State Congress and General Secretary of Hyderabad City Congress.

 

In 1950, Reddy was nominated to the Provisional Parliament and was elected to Hyderabad Legislative Assembly in the first General Elections, where he served as Minister for Agriculture and Food, Planning and Rehabilitation in Hyderabad State. He got re-elected from Vikarabad constituency in 1957 and in 1962 from Tandur Constituency. He served as the Minister for Planning and Panchayat Raj and later shuffled his cabinet position handling the portfolios of Finance, Commercial Taxes and Industries. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1967 and served as Minister for Steel and Mines. He was elected twice the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh representing Indian National Congress.
