Mario Miranda was born on 2 May 1926 in Daman, Portuguese India. He was born into a Goan catholic family. His ancestral surname was originally Sardessai. His drawing talents were noticed by his mother during his young ages when he drew on walls of his house. She brought him a blank diary and encouraged him. As a child he used to sketch Catholic priests which landed him to troubles very often. Since young his works were based on Goan village life.

After schooling and graduation, he studied architecture. But he couldn’t find interest in it. By the encouragement of his friends, he started designing post cards to earn extra pocket money. He worked in an Advertising studio for four years, and later spent his full time in drawing cartoons. His cartoons first appeared in The Illustrated Weekly of India. Very soon he earned recognition as a cartoonist and his works appeared in many magazines including Femina, Economic Times, and The Illustrated Weekly of India.

With the help of Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian Scholarship, he travelled to Portugal to learn more about art and later spent a few years at London and worked in television animation before he returned back. He lived in Portugal one year and spent 5 years in London. He worked with noted cartoonist, R.K. Laxman in Times of India, once he returned back. In 1974, he was invited to United States Information Services, which marked the turning point of his career. He came into contact with many leading cartoonists and also got opportunity to work with Charles M. Schulz.
