Margi Sathi Biography

Margi Sathi was a renowned Nangiyar Koothu artist in Kerala – an art form that is a female derivative of  Koodiyattam, traditionally performed by Hindu Nambiar Community. Though the art form is restricted only to Ambalavasi Nambiar community, Margi was one among those renowned artists who brought this traditional art form out of caste barrier and popularized it across Kerala. An accomplished artist of Nangiyar Koothu, she has performed extensively within India and abroad. She passed away on 1st December 2015 night and she was undergoing treatment of cancer at RCC. She was only 50 years old. She stood as the strong feminine narrative of Nangiyar Koothu and has contributed immensely to the evolution of this art form.

 

She was born in 1965 at Cheruthuruthy in Thrissur as the daughter of Puthillathu Subramanyan Embranthiri and Parvathy Andarjanam. She was initiated to this art form at Kerala Kalamandalam, Cheruthuruthy at the age of 11 under Painkulam Ramachakiyar. She trained for 8 years under Painkulam Rama Chakyar, Mani Madhava Chakyar and Ammannur Madhava Chakyar. She performed in both Nangiarkoothu and Koodiyattam. She joined Margi Thiruvananthapuram in 1988, an organization dedicated to the revival of Kathakali and Koodiyattam. Since then ‘Margi’ tag got added to her name. She was married to idakka artist, N Subramanyom who predeceased her. The couple has one daughter.

 

She performed at UNESCO headquarters in Paris in October 2001, where she was recognised by the UNESCO as a unique artistic heritage of entire humanity. Sathi had written several Attaprakaram (performance manuals) for Nagiyarkooth. In 1999 she published attaprakaram for Sreeramacharitham, which is recognized the first book of Nagiyarkooth describing attaprakaram in the modern times. She has also appeared in a few Malayalam movies like Swapnadanam, Ivan Megharoopan, Nottam etc.
