Manohar Singh Biography

Manohar Singh is a noted film and theatre actor, who works in Bollywood. He is a distinguished playwright and theatre director as well. In 1982, he was awarded with Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Acting (Hindi theatre). As a character artist of Hindi cinema, his most memorable roles are Party (1984), Dikhsha (1991), Rudali, Chandni and Lamhe and Daddy (1989). Tughlaq directed by Ebrahim Alkazi, Himmat Mai and Begum Barve by Nissar and Amal Allana are his most brilliant performances as a theatre artist.

 

Singh was born in 1938 in a small village called Kwara near Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. He worked in the drama division of state government which was his first job. He graduated from NSD in 1971, and soon after started directing plays with NSD Repertory Company. Qatl Ki Hawas in 1971 marked his debut as a play director for NSD. In 1976 he became the second chief of the NSD Repertory Company and remained in the position till 1988. His performance in Tughlaq directed by his mentor Ebrahim Alkazi still remains as his most memorable performance. He portrayed the lead actor with name Tughlaq in this play.

 

He quit NSD in the late 1980’s and joined Delhi theatre. His association with Delhi Theatre also owns a few notable performances. Pagla Raja, Himmat Mai, Begum Barve and Nagamandalam were born in this association. He also acted in the controversial Hindi movie based on the Emergency period during the middle 1970s – Kissa Kursi kaa. But this political satire starring Shabana Azmi, Raj Babbar, Utpal Dutt, Rehana Sultan and Manohar Singh in the pivot roles was banned by Indian government then. All the prints and the master-print of the film at Censor Board office were picked up and burned leaving without any traces.
