Manjula Vijayakumar Biography

Manjula Vijayakumar was a south Indian actress who concentrated most on Tamil movies. She was one among those lucky stars who got opportunity to work opposite MGR and Sivaji Ganesan as leading actress in the super hit movies of 70’s. She starred opposite MGR in the super hit movie ‘Rickshawkaaran’ which gave National award for best actor for M. G. Ramachandran. Apart from Tamil, she has also acted in other south Indian languages and during 90’s she concentrated most on supporting and negative roles in film industry. She was married to actor Vijayakumar and their daughters Sridevi Vijayakumar and Preetha are actresses of south India. She died on 23 July 2013 in SRMC at Chennai after falling down from bed and the whole industry still mourns over the unexpected death of this actress who was at her late 50’s.

She first appeared in the film Shanthi Nilayam (1969) in a supporting role where Gemini Ganeshan was the leading actor. Her first lead role was in Rickshawkaran (1971) and it gave her big break to Tamil movies. She has worked with almost all leading stars of 70’s - Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, M. G. Ramachandran, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Krishna, Shobhan Babu, Kamal Hassan, Vishnuvardhan and Rajinikanth. She was one of the leading ladies of MGR after Rickshawkaran and together they have delivered hits like Ulakam chuttum vaaliban (1974). She has worked opposite Sivaji in the movie – Anbe Aaruyire (1975). She worked opposite Akkineni Nageswara Rao in the Telugu movie – Mahakavi Kshetrayya.

A few of her Telugu movies in lead role include Mahakavi Kshetrayya, Maa Iddari Katha, Bangaru Bommalu, Neram Nadhi Kadhu Akalidhi, Manushulanta Okkate, Magadu, Chiranjeevi Rambabu, Manushulu Chesina Dongalu, Bhale Donggalu, Iddaru Iddare, Gunavanthudu and Monagadu. Her Kannada movies include Sirithanakke Sawaal.

She has appeared in a few mega blockbuster hits of Malayalam during 90’s. She played negative roles in Mohanlal’s Abhimanyu and Mammootty’s Jackpot which proved very successful.
