Manish Gupta Biography

Manish Gupta is a noted screenwriter and director of Bollywood known for the association with Ram Gopal Varma camp. His first film as a writer was Sarkar and is regarded as one of the most real and honest filmmakers around. It was followed by a stream of screenplays for Ram Gopal Varma -D (2005), James (2005), and Darna Zaroori Hai (2006). He wrote and directed the murder mystery -The Stoneman Murders, which received critics’ appreciation though the movie didn’t fare well at box office. It was his first movie as a full-fledged director and starred Kay Kay Menon and Arbaaz Khan in pivot roles. Manish’s upcoming movie, ‘Rahasya’ attempts to unfold the mystery of Aarushi murder case, which stars Kay Kay Menon, Tisca Chopra and Ashish Vidyarthi in lead roles.

 

He was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Agnel Technical College, Bandra in 1994. Then he worked as a shop floor engineer for a private company for 6 years. Then he decided to pursue his creative instincts and switched on to another profession by joining an ad agency as a copywriter. He began writing TV and radio commercials and during this time, he happened to watch Ram Gopal Varma’s Company. It influenced him a lot and he approached Varma with his scripts. Thus he joined mainstream film industry.

 

Varma was influenced by his film script of Sarkar and thus, offered him to write scripts for upcoming projects. Later he debut as a director with the movie, Darna Zaroori Hai, where he directed one segment. 2009 release The Stoneman Murders marked his career as an independent director. In 2011, his second movie – Hostel was released. He has also appeared as a child artist in Indian banned movie, Om-Dar-Ba-Dar which got released in January 2014 after long 26 years.
