Manik Sarkar Biography

Manik Sarkar is a politician and member of Communist Part of India. Currently he is the chief minister of Tripura. In assembly elections held in 2013, he became the chief minister for the consecutive fourth time. He is a Politburo Member of Communist Party of India (Marxist). In March 2008, he was sworn in as leader of Left Front, the Tripura coalition government. Manik Sarkar donates his CM salary and allowances to his party and remains of the role models among politicians and social workers of present times. He is one with lowest monetary resources of all Chief Ministers of India according to latest reports.

 
Manik Sarkar was born in a middle class family in Tripura on January 22, 1949 as the son of Amulya Sarkar, a tailor and Anjali Sarkar, a state government employee. He was active in politics and students’ movements while at college. At the age of 19, in 1968, he became a member of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was graduated from MBB College where he was a candidate of the Students' Federation of India. While at college, he has actively participated in food movement of 1967 against the then Congress government of Tripura. This agitation owned him a permanent membership in Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the year 1968. He was also the General Secretary of MBB College Student Union and also has been elected as Vice President of the Students' Federation of India. In 1972, he was inducted into the Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Committee.

In 1978, Sarkar was included in the party state Secretariat. In 1980, at the age of 31, he was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Agartala consistency. It was the real beginning of the political career of Manik sarkar. Manik Sarkar is married to Panchali Bhattacharya and couple lives a simple life without own house or not even a car in his name! Indeed he is a role model among Indian politicians!
