Mandeep Singh (hockey) Biography

Mandeep Singh is an Indian professional field hockey player. He currently plays as a forward for Ranchi Rhinos in the Hockey India League and the India national field hockey team. He was born on 25 January 1995 in Jalandhar, Punjab. He received Ponty Chadha Trophy for the Upcoming Player of the Tournament in 2013.

Singh’s early career began with Surjit Hockey Academy in his hometown, Jalandhar where he played field hockey as a youth player. On 16 December 2012, he became a part of first ever Hockey India League auction by the franchise Ranchi Rhinos where he won the bid by 13000 US dollars. He made his debut for the Rhinos on 16 January 2013 against Punjab Warriors at the Surjit Hockey Stadium in Ranchi. It was the first league match in Indian hockey. He scored the second goal for his team thus becoming a part of the winning side. Rhinos won the league match by 2-1. He then scored his second goal of the season in the next match against Mumbai Magicians on 18 January 2013. In the same match too Rhinos won 3-1. His third goal of the season was on 23 January 2013 against Delhi Waveriders. But the team lost the match.

His first double of his career on 26 January 2013 against Uttar Pradesh Wizards at the Dhyan Chand Astroturf Stadium. He won Man of match award for the first time after he scored the winning goal for Ranchi Rhinos against the Mumbai Magicians. He then scored his final goal of the regular season on 4 February 2013 against the Punjab Warriors. After the season ended Singh was the second highest scorer of the season and won the Hockey India League's Ponty Chadha Trophy for the Upcoming Player of the Tournament award after scoring 10 goals in 13 matches. His international debut for the India national field hockey team was on 18 February 2013 against Fuji when India scored 16-0.
