Manas Chakraborty Biography

Manas Chakraborty was an Indian classical vocalist from Bengal. He was the son of renowned musician, Sangeetacharya Tarapada Chakraborty. He composed many Bengali songs and has also published a collection of Bengali poems named ‘Tumio Bhetore Neel Nakshatra’. His nephew Srijato is a noted young poet and lyricist belonging to Bengali language. Manas dedicated his full life to the world of music and he also performed at many music conferences and programs since 1970s. He was most active in the era of 1970s and 1980s. Jadubhatta Award (1995), Girija Shankar Memorial Award (1989), Heritage Samman by Heritage World Society (2012), Maharishi Award (1987), Dishari Award twice by West Bengal Journalists' Association and Sangeet Samman Award by The Dover Lane Music Conference (2011) are the major honours received by him.

 

He was born in 1942 in Barishal of British India which belongs to present day Bangladesh. . He was born into a musical family which has inherited music for more than a millennium years. Tarapada too earned name and fame as a vocalist who excelled in Kotali Gharana. He inherited this school of music from his father, Sangeetacharya Tarapada Chakraborty. Manas was a devout pursuer of various streams of Indian classical music and initiated a style of his own. He set his khayal gayaki as per the characteristics of raga. Chakraborty was also a dedicated teacher who groomed many talented youngsters.

 

He mastered all languages of Khayal, Thumri, and other semi-classical styles of music. His creations included the pseudonym – Sadasanta, Sadasant Piya etc. He had a great control of his voice and created magic through romantic compositions, loved by his ardent fans. He dedicated more than 50 years to the world of Hindustani music. He passed away on 12 December 2012. The 72-year-old musician is survived by his wife and daughter.
