Mala Sinha Biography

A beautiful Nepali born Christian girl came to Bollywood during 1950’s. After a series of flops, she established as a powerful actress on screen. She is remembered for her acting skills as well as eternal beauty. Her real name was Alda, but she changed her name to Mala as her friends used to tease her as ‘Dalda’. Though she learnt singing and dancing in her childhood, she established herself as a beautiful and successful actress onscreen.

She started her acting journey as a child artist in Bengali movies and Roshanaara in 1952 made her a heroine.  Her entry to Hindi celluloid was through the movie Badshah pairing with Pradeep Kumar. After a series of flop movies, Phir Subah Hogi, directed by Ramesh Saigal established her as an actress of Bollywood. Pradeep Kumar was her main co-star during 1950’s with a string of movies – Detective, Fashion and Duniya Na mane. In 1957, the movie Pyasa opposite Guru Dutt turned to be the milestone movie of Mala Sinha’s career.

After that, Mala Sinha’s career witnessed a steep rise with the following movies – Dhool ka phool co-starring Rajendra Kumar and Phir Subah Hogi. Then followed a series of successful movies like Gumrah, Himalay ki gode mein, Ujala, Love marriage, Jaha Ara, Night in London, Ankhen, Get, Lalkar, Hariyali aur rastha and Dil tera deewana. She has been co-paired with almost all successful heroes of that time. Shammi Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Pradeep kumar, Raj Kumar, Dharmendra, Biswajith, Manoj Kumar and many more. She acted with both established senior actors as well as young actors that time, proved her versatility as a traditional and modern girl too. Still she is remembered for women oriented movies like Dhool ka phool. Apart from Hindi movies, she acted in Bengali as well as Nepali.

She got married to Chidambar Prasad Lohani, a co-star of Nepali movie. Yet she didn’t end her relationship with movies and acting career.  But in the middle 70’s she slowly withdrew from acting and concentrated to her personal life.  Their daughter, Prathibha Sinha has acted in a few movies of Bollywood and her song ‘Pardesi’ from Raja Hindusthani picturised on her is still remembered most.
