Major Sundarrajan Biography

Major Sundarrajan was a veteran actor of Tamil cinema known for his distinct dialogue delivery. Starting as an amateur stage artist even while working in the Telecom department in the early 1950s, he entered the cinema world in the early 1960s. Major Chandrakant was his first major and popular role, which added ‘Major’ tag permanently to his name. He acted in over 900 films, thus becoming one of the greatest character artists of Tamil cinema. Towards the end phase of his life he was active in television. Noted actor cum choreographer, Gowtham Sundararajan is his son.

 

He was born in Chennai in 1935. He started off as an amateur stage artist. He worked in Telecom department in the early 1950s and he carried off his passion of stage in association with it. Sundararajan entered the film world with Pattinathaar (1962), directed by K. Somu. He played the role of a blind and retired army official in K. Balachander's Major Chandrakant, which was his real breakthrough. The movie released in 1966 gave him the tag, Major.

 

Very soon he became famous for his distinct style of dialogue delivery and he excelled in portraying both rough and soft characters. He also played villain onscreen several times, mixing Tamil and English dialogues in his style. Gowravam, Edhir Neetchal, Bama Vijayam, Abhoorva Raagangal and Deiva Cheyal are some of his memorable roles. He played lead role in the play - Gnana Oli. The play was later made to a movie with Sivaji Ganesan playing the same role while Major Sundarrajan did a cameo role. He has regularly worked with Sivaji Ganesan movies. In 1988, he joined Sivaji’s political outfit - "Tamilaga Munnetra Munnani".
