Major Ravi Biography

Major Ravi is a former Indian Army Officer who has ventured into Malayalam cinema as a film director. He is known for making movies dedicated to Indian Military service and is a true patriot. Except his debut film, he has chosen Indian military as the theme of his films and in most cases they were big hits at box office too. Ravi is known for his association with actor Mohanlal and Keerthi Chakra, their first project was a huge hit at box-office too. Actor Amitabh Bachchan has worked in a single Malayalam movie in his lifetime till now – It’s for Kandhahar, aside Mohanlal though the movie failed to make an impact at box office. His films have been instrumental for getting Lt Colonel position to Mohanlal, the only Indian actor to get this position of military. He was given this position so that youth gets inspired by it to join military. As a jawan Major Ravi is a recipient of Indian President’s medal.

His full name is Major A.K. Ravindran and he belongs to Pattambi of Palakkad district, Kerala. He joined the Indian army as a jawan in 1975 and graduated from the Army Cadet College to become a commando in the year 1988. He was a member of the operation named - Operation One-eyed Jack to capture suspects of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. He worked for around 20 years in Indian military service before retiring. Later he became a military consultant for Indian films. He has worked with leading directors of the industry like Priyadarshan, Rajkumar Santhoshi, Kamal Haasan, and Mani Ratnam, doing bit roles for the movies. He acted in Priyadarshan’s Megham and Raakkilippaattu (Snegithiye – Tamil). He was the single male character of the movie, Raakkilippattu – the movie known for casting only female characters. He played a bit role of corpse in the movie.

As a film director, Punarjani (2002) was his debut movie with Pranav, son of Mohanlal in the lead role. After that he has made movies only based on Indian military service.  Mission 90 Days (2007) with Mammootty in the lead role was based on Operation One-eyed Jack, in which he was a member before. Karma Yodha and Oru Yathrayil are other releases.
