Mahzarin Banaji Biography

Mahzarin Rustum Banaji, shortly known as Mahzarin Banaji is an American social psychologist at Harvard University. She was born and raised in Secunderabad. Her major publications include - The bankruptcy of everyday memory research (1989), Some everyday thoughts on ecologically valid methods (1991), Implicit social cognition: Attitudes, self-esteem, and stereotypes (1995), A unified theory of implicit attitudes, stereotypes, self-esteem, and self-concept (2002), mplicit bias among physicians and its prediction of thrombolysis decisions for black and white patients (2007) and the latest one, Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People (2013).

 

Mahzarin Rustum Banaji was born in 1956 in Secunderabad, from where she did her schooling. She took degree in arts from Nizam College and post graduation from Osmania University in Hyderabad. Psychology was her subject. In 1986, Banaji received a Ph.D. from Ohio State University, and was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at University of Washington. Later she served as a professor at Yale University during the period, 1986-2001. In 2001, she moved to Harvard University as Richard Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics in the Department of Psychology, followed by Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study during the period 2002-2008.

 

Banaji was elected fellow of the Society of Experimental Psychologists in 2005 and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008. She is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. She has also served in the editor board of several international journals. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and a few more organizations. Banaji studies human thinking and feeling as it unfolds in social contexts and she focuses on mental systems that operate in implicit or unconscious mode.
