Mahua Roychoudhury Biography

Mahua Roychoudhury was a popular Bengali film actress who died at a young age. When she passed away in 1986 at the age of 27 following a fire incident, she was the reigning queen of the Bengali screen. Her death is still an unsolved puzzle and there were around 15 films which were in the production stage. Many of those films got released posthumously such as 'Anurager Choya', 'Abhimaan', 'Ashirbaad', 'Kenaram Becharam', 'Abir' etc. Her original name was Shipra Roy Choudhury. It was director Tarun Majumdar who discovered and rechristened her as Mahua. She received Filmfare Awards for her performance in the film Dadar Kirti in 1980. Aadmi Aur Aurat (1984) with Amol Palekar won her critical acclaim. Lal Golap in 1983 was a blockbuster.

 

She was born on 24 September 1958 as Shipra Roy Choudhury. She was born into a lower middle class family as the daughter of a dancer, Nilanjan Roychowdhury. Since childhood she excelled in dance forms and never got opportunity to complete her studies. It was director Tarun Majumdar who identified the real potential of Shipra and later rechristened her as Mahua Roychoudhury. Mahua excelled both in classical dance forms and western dance forms, which was quite rare among actresses then. These features along with her acting potential, groomed by Sandhya Roy helped her to become an actress of top lead. Tarun Majumdar’s Sriman Pritthiraj (1972) marked her acting debut.

 

She was reigning as the queen of Bengali cinema in the 1980s and has also successfully produced many movies also. She rose to fame and earned everything including money in a very short period. She shared screen space with almost all leading actors of the industry in the 1970s and 1980s. She was paired with Uttam Kumar for the movies, Sei Chokh, Bagh Bandi Khela etc. She married actor Tilak Chakraborty on 2 May 1976 and the couple had one son.

 

It was a time when films used to run on her shoulders and scripts were written specially for her. Following a fire mishap she was seriously wounded July12th midnight, 1986. She passed away on July 22nd. Exact reason behind the fire accident is still unknown. Many of her films got released posthumously. Nearly one-third of the films under pre-production stage belonged to Mahua, when the unfortunate incident took place.
