Mahalakshmi Iyer Biography

Mahalakshmi Iyer is a gifted Indian singer who sings in Bollywood as well as south Indian movies. She is known for association with A. R. Rahman and has sung numerous hit songs for him. Though she get noticed in the middle 1990’s, she got instant stardom in the year 2000 singing a series of songs for Rahman, belonging to Tamil. The title track of Kandukondain Kandukondain and the wedding song ‘Yaro yarodi’ of Alaippayuthey were her noted hits in the year 2000 with Rahman. She also sang the romantic track of Mudhalvan, "Kurukku Siruthhavale" for Rahman in 1999.

 

Though she accompanied Udit Narayan in the soft track ‘Ee Ajnabi’ of Dil Se, it was the song, Kabhi sham dale to’ of the movie Sur: The melody of love (2002) which made her a popular singer of Bollywood. The Hindi version of her super hit song of Alaipayuthey – Chalka chalka re was also released the same year. The success of Chup Chuke of Bunti aur Babli and "Ishq Khudai" of Rudraksh just followed it. She is most known for romantic tracks in Bollywood. She has sung with almost all leading music directors of Hindi as well as south Indian film industry. "Aaj Ki Raat" of Don, "Rock N' Roll Soniye" of Kabhi alvida na kehna, "Chanda Chamke" of Fanaa, "Tenu Leke" of Salaam-e-Ishq, "Khud Ko Tere" of 1920: Evil returns, "Dil Laga Na" of Dhoom 2, "Falak Tak Chal" of Tashan, "Sadka Kiya" of I hate love stories and "Bol Na Halke Halke" of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom are her most popular tracks of Bollywood. She has also rendered her voice for popular Hindi remixes like Aaja Piya Tohe Pyar and Baahon Mein Chali Aao.

 

She made her singing debut with unreleased Bollywood movie, Dus in the late 1990’s. She was the female voice of the chartbuster patriotic song – Suno Zor se. She received offers from both Tamil as well as Hindi and she achieved stardom in a short period. She has also rendered her voice for jingles as well as television serials. She has also accompanied Sukhwinder Singh for the Academy award winning track, Jai ho of Slumdog millionaire.
