Madhu Rye Biography

Madhu Rye is a noted writer associated with Gujarati literature. Madhu Rye is the pen name of Madhusudan Vallabhdas Thaker. He is a prolific playwright, novelist and short story writer. He is a recipient of Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak for the year 1999. His play - Sura Ane Shatrujeet earned him Bhupen Khakhar award in 2004. Started his literal journey in the 1960s he spent more than 50 years in his literal world. Many of his plays were been successfully staged and have been translated to other languages as well. Chehra (1966) was his experimental novel. Kimball Ravenswood, Kalpataru, Kamini, Sabha, Kumarni Agashi etc are other published novels. Koipan Ek Phoolnu Naam Bolo To – is his celebrated play.

His real name is Madhusudan Vallabhdas Thaker. He was born on 16 July 1942 in Jamkhambhaliya, Gujarat.  His school education was completed at Dwaraka and graduation from Kolkata. Started writing during his college days, his talents were encouraged by Shivkumar Joshi and Chandrakant Bakshi. Started his professional career as a teacher, he later worked as machinery consultant for a few years before he became active in writing. He used his pen name, Madhu Rye to write his first short story which won second prize at a competition.

After moving to Ahmedabad he worked as a marketing writer for Navneetlal and Co. Two years later he wrote his first play, Koipan Ek Phool nu Naam Bolo To. The play was staged by Darpana Academy and it was directed by famous personality, Mrinalini Sarabhai. After doing a short term direction course at US, he got fully associated with theatre. After his first published short story, Banshi Naamni Ek Chhokri in1964, Roopkatha, Kaalsarp and More Piya Gaye Rangoon are other noted short story collections.
