Madhu Muttam Biography

Madhu Muttam is a Malayalam writer and poet better as the scriptwriter of Malayalam classic and phenomenally successful movie ‘Manichitrathazhu’ which starred Shobana, Mohanlal and Suresh Gopi in pivot roles. The movie released in 1993 is regarded as one of the best Malayalam films till now and it went on to receive numerous awards including National award for best actress and most popular and entertaining film.

 

Manichitrathazhu is one of the most successfully remade Indian films till now and it has been remade in Kannada as Apthamitra, in Tamil as Chandramukhi, and finally in Hindi as Bhool Bhulaiyaa. All these versions proved commercial hits as well. Madhu Muttam also penned the popular poem of Manichitrathazhu, Varuvaanillarumee sung by Chitra. Though Madhu Muttam has scripted two more Malayalam movies, both couldn’t replicate the hysteria of Manichitrathazhu. But first film, Kakkothikkavile Appooppan Thaadikal (1986) is still the most favourite film of its director, Kamal though it was not a huge hit at box office. This movie too is regarded as a classic.

 

His real name is Madhu K Panicker. He was born on August 1, 1951 in an agriculture family in Harippad. His parents were Kunju Panicker and Meenakshi Amma. He is the single child born in the family. He lost his father at the age of 13. He is unmarried and still lives in Muttom, Thodupuzha. ‘Muttom’ is the place name added to his name as tag. Kakkothikkavile Appooppan Thaadikal was his debut movie as a screenwriter. He has also penned two Malayalam scripts, 'The Bharathan Effect' (2006) and 'Kaanakombathu' (2010). He is one among those rare screenwriters of Indian cinema who found space in the Indian film history through a single work!
