Madhu Mohan Biography

Madhu Mohan – the evergreen hero of mini screen is the artist who revolutionized Malayalam Serial concept since late 1980s. He has been instrumental in popularizing Malayalam television serials among masses, since the early days of Doordarshan in the late 1980s when it was introduced to small screen. It was a time when Malayalam serials and Madhu Mohan’s name were mentioned synchronous and he was one of those names who made Malayalam serials for the first time and acted as well. It can be said he was one of the first popular heroes of Malayalam mini screen. Later he did Tamil serials also and became successful. ‘Manasi’, ‘Sheha Seema’, ‘Jwalayayi’ etc are the most successful Malayalam television soaps in the late 1990s, produced and directed by him. But dragging episodes, when switched to soaps have brought criticism also.  ‘Sheha Seema’ was the first daily soap on Malayalam scene.

From the era of 13-episode serials to daily soaps, Madhu Mohan is known for his tailor-made roles, though has been experimenting with concepts over years. He has acted in 2,640 serial episodes in Malayalam as the lead actor and 1590 in Tamil. It can be said that he is the first superstar of Malayalam mini screen, a time when Doordarshan was the only channel available. He has also done a few film roles before his entry to small screen. His decision to switch to television proved to be his major career breakthrough. Now he has completed 25 years in this field, though not a part of Malayalam scene which he left years ago. Now he is settled in Chennai.

He was attracted to arts since school days and started off with school dramas. He played the role of a leprosy patient in his first stage performance which earned him an award. Then he gradually got associated with the field. While studying Pre-degree at Victoria College, Palakkad he got opportunities to play some good roles. Then he worked in Faridabad and was associated with cultural shows. Then he worked at Telco in Delhi, followed by Ashok Leyland, a time when he got completely associated with plays. He started a drama troupe – J. R. stage creations during this period.

‘Veettodu Maappilai’ – was the most popular play under this troupe which was successfully staged at many places. It received numerous awards as well, and later became instrumental in his serial entry too. He made his acting debut through Tamil serial – Nagaki Unakkoru namaskaram directed by C. V. Raghavan. Later he got active in serials and resigned his job to get permanently associated with television. It was during that time when Malayalam Doordarshan has just started and his previous experience in Tamil industry helped him a lot in doing Malayalam serials. Thus began ‘Madhu Mohan Era’ of Malayalam. Currently he is associated with serials which are telecasted in Sun TV and Zee Tamil.
