Maalavika Manoj Biography

Maalavika Manoj, also known as Mali is a songwriter and musician from Chennai. Former member of the underground band Bass-in-Bridge, she is currently a solo performing artist since 2011. Maalavika was featured in the "Sachin Anthem" composed by Dhanush, released in 2012. Deceptive is her debut album released in 2013. Got inspired by melancholy, this independent musician has also rendered her voice for a few Tamil songs. She is of Kerala origin, born to parents of Malabar origin.

 

Her first break to films was given by Anirudh Ravichander for 2011 film, ‘3’, where she rendered the song - "Come on Girls". It was followed by Vijay Antony’s composition for 2012 movie – Haridas, "Yaen Endral" for Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara and the title track - "Hi My Name is Malini" for the film - Malini 22 Palayamkottai. She has been a speaker at several international events, most notably TEDxYouth@Chennai conference in 2012 and Ventura 2013 at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli.

 

Maalavika was born on 16 September 1993 in Chennai. Since childhood she listened to music a lot. She mostly listened to the music of 1970s and 1980s. She also listened to electronic music. Though she was enrolled for swimming, dancing and music classes at the age of 5, she quit all except piano. She learnt piano till the age of 17 and later she learnt guitar. Music was only a hobby then, and she never thought to pursue a career in music.

 

In 2010, Maalavika performed at Maithri and managed to win "Best Vocalist" title. RJ Arjun Thomas suggested her to start a band. Thus she became one of the founding members of "Bass-in-Bridge" band, where Arjun stayed as the guitarist. A few more members like Sajith Satya as the bassist, Leon James as the keyboardist joined the band. In June 2011, Bass-in-Bridge performed at a music festival called "Fete de la Musique" at Chennai. The band was dissolved the same year, when Leon, Maalavika and Sajith turned solo artists.
