M.T. Padma Biography

M.T. Padma is an Indian politician from Kerala, associated with state politics. She is a prominent Leader of Democratic Indira Congress. She served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kozhikode City Corporation in 2013. She has unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha elections twice, in 1999 and 2004 from Palakkad and Vatakara constituencies respectively. Padma has been a member of Kerala Vidhan Sabha 1987 and 1991 elections, representing the Koyilandy constituency. She served as Minister for Fisheries and Rural Development 1991-95 and as Minister of Fisheries & Registration 1995-96.

M.T. Padma hails from Kannur, Kerala. She was born on January 9, 1943 during British rule in India. She was born as the daughter of M. Govindan and C.T. Kausalya. M. Radhakrishnan is her husband and they have one son and one daughter. Padma was active in student politics, and served as vice president of the Kerala Students Union, students’ wing associated with Indian National Congress. Before that she became the Vice-President of KSU Kozhikode Unit. She contested Vidhan Sabha elections for the first time in 1982 representing Congress (I), and got defeated. Later she contested two more times, 1987 and 1991 elections, winning from Koyilandy both these terms consectively.

 

Padma tried her luck in Lok Sabha elections twice. But she got defeated both these times. In 1999 she was defeated by N.N. Krishnnadas, and for the second time in 2004 by P. Sathidevi. Both these times, she was defeated by huge margins. She was earlier associated with Indian National Congress, and later she joined the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran), the party to which she is affiliated now.
