M.g. Radhakrishnan Biography

M.G. Radhakrishnan is one among the prominent music composers of Malayalam during 90’s. He is a famous Carnatic singer too. His siblings are also in the film industry. His younger sister Omanakutty is a famous carnatic singer and his brother M.G. Srikumar is a famous playback singer of the industry. His father was also a musician and famous harmonist of that time. Famous singer Yesudas was his class mate at Swati Tirunal Music Academy from where he took Ganabhushanam.

Though he became famous as a successful music composer and carnatic singer, he debut as a singer through 1969 superhit movie ‘Kallichellamma’ starring Sheela and Prem Nazir. Song was Unniganapathiye. He has a successful career as music composer at Akashvaani too. His hit songs as a singer include "Pallanayattin Theerathu" from Ningalenne Communist Aakki (You made me communist) and "Sharike Sharike" from Sharashayya of 70’s.

He debut as music director through the movie Thampu in 1978. But his work was most noted for his second movie – Thakara of 1980, which won many critical acclimation including musical awards. For the musical “Mauname Nirayum Mauname”, Janaki won best singer state award. He has given opportunities to Sujatha and Venu Gopal to enter singing world. He had recorded amazing songs with Yesudas, Janaki, Chitra and his younger brother M.G.Srikumar.

He has given successful music to many Mohanlal movies including Adwaytham, Kireedam, Devasuram and Manichitrathazhu which are considered classics till now! All are released during early 90’s or so. ‘Poomukha vaathilkkal’ of Rakkuyilin ragasadassil is still the favourite number of many husbands. His other hits include Anantha bhadram, Kaattu vannu vilichappol, Jnan ekanaanu, Sarvakalaashala, Poochakkoru mookkuthi, Agnidevan, Parayanum Vayya Parayathirikkanum Vayya, Geetham, Jaalakam, Nomrathi poovu, Ammayane satyam, Kashmeeram, Kannezhuthi pottum thott, Narasimham, Raktha saakshikal zindabad, Mekha sandesham and Achaneyaanenikkishttam.

He is remembered one among the best composers who has given melodious classics to Malayalam. Though he has done significant work during 80’s and 90’s, he had to wait for more than two decades to win an award. It’s really surprising that, still his compositions of his first phase of film career without awards are remembered most than those which he has got recognition in 2000’s. He might not have won awards for Mauname, Oru murai or Ambalapuzha songs. Yet as a composer he is remembered most for these songs, no doubt!

He has won state awards twice after 2000’s - Achaneyaanenikkishtam and Ananthabhadram (his last movie). He has won Asianet awards for Kaate Vannu Vilichappol and Ananthabhadram.
