M. Padmakumar Biography

M. Padmakumar is an Indian film director of Malayalam cinema best known for the movie, Vaasthavam which gave state award for best actor to Prithviraj. Three of his movies were released in the year 2013 – Orissa, Ithu Pathira manal and D Company. But his works went unnoticed. Yet this director is noted for his talents. He has also directed the first segment – ‘Nostalgia of anthology movie, Kerala Café which comprises of 10 short films. Through this segment he tried to say the real truth behind Malayali faces, who settle abroad. Dileep, Navya Nair and Sudheesh played lead role in Nostalgia. It was a 10-minute film based on R. Venugopal's poem Nattuvazhikal.

He debut film world as an independent director in the year 2002 with Ammakkilikoodu, which starred Prithviraj, Navya Nair and Kaviyur Ponnama in lead roles. He chose the theme of Old age homes in the movie and the movie was well appreciated for the theme chosen. Before that he was active in the industry as an assistant director since late 1980’s with Aranyakam (1988) to begin with. Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, Neelagiri, Ravanaprabhu, Mizhi randilum and Chandrolsavam are other noted works as an assistant director.

He has a good association with actor Prithviraj. His association with Prithvirak began with his debut movie as a director, Ammakkilikoodu which told the story of mother love and old age homes. It was followed by two more films in a row – Vargam and Vasthavam. The director regards Vasthavam very close to his heart. This movie told the story of a young revolutionist who rose to political power. This movie was loosely based on Thakazhi's famous novel 'Enippadikal'. Though he has been associated with megastars for movies like Shikari and Parunthu, none has been successful. In 2012, Thiruvambadi Thamban was a moderate hit.  At present he is busy with a project of Kunchacko Boban.
