M. P. Veerendra Kumar Biography

M. P. Veerendra Kumar is a noted politician from Socialist Janata (Democratic) from Kerala. He has also authored several books. In 2010, he received prestigious Kendra Sahitya Academy award for his travelogue – Haimavatha Bhoovil. His son M.V. Shreyams Kumar is also a famous politician and an MLA right now. He was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha of India and at present serves as the president of Kerala state unit of Socialist Janata party.

Veerendra Kumar was born in Wayanad on 15 August 1937 to Marudevi Avva and Padmaprabha Gowder. His schooling was done at Kalpetta and Kozhikode. He took Masters in Philosophy from Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, Chennai. He was the treasurer and national committee member of the former Samyukta Socialist Party and has also served as state secretary of the Kerala Unit of the Socialist Party. He has also served as Vice President and President positions of the former Janata Party. During 1987-91 he was elected member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly and in 1996, he was elected to Lok sabha where he has served as Minister of state for Labour and Minister of Finance. In 2007, he received Dr. Yuhanon Mor Philexinos Foundation Puraskaram for the Best Parliamentarian.

He is a noted writer also. His most noted work is Ramante dukham that has already been reprinted 18 times. 'Amazonum Kure Vyakulathakalum' has won the Sahitya Academy Award. He has also won Vayalar award, Kerala Kala Kendra's Global Award, Akshara award, Dr. C.P. Menon Smaraka Award, C.H. Mohamed Koya Memorial Award, Odakkuzhal award and Rotary Sahitya Award. A few of his noted works include - Lokavyapara Samkhadanayum Oorakkudukkukalum, Buddhante Chiri, Prathibhayute Verukal Thedi, Gattum Kanacharadukalum, Adhinivesathinte Adiyozhukukal, Thirinjhunokkumbol, Ramantedhukkam, Atmavilekkoru Theerthayathra and Samanwayathinte Vasantham.
