M. N. Nambiar Biography

M. N. Nambiar was an Indian film actor who had been performing villain roles and character roles in Tamil film industry for more than five decades. He entered film industry as a comedian in 1935 through the film Bhaktha Ramadas which was filmed both in Tamil and Hindi.

 

Nambiar was born on 7th March 1919 in Cherupazhassi village in Kannur and his original name was Manjeri Narayanan Nambiar. His father’s name was Kelu Nambiar and his mother’s name was Lakshmi. Nambiar is his family name. He lost his father when he was a small child and he moved to Ooty where he completed his education. He was living with his elder sister at that time and he had great interest in acting. So he joined the troupe of Nawab Rajamanikkam.

 

Though he started his career as a hero, soon he changed to villain roles and had worked with actors of many generations. He initially worked with Boys Company for a meager salary. He is very simple and health conscious. He performed 11 roles in the film Digambara Samiyar. Though he had performed in more than 1000 films, his performance in some films like Velaikari, Manthiri Kumari, Ayirathil Oruvan, Thillana Mohanambal and Nenjam Marappadillai were received with great applause.

 

He started his own drama troupe called Nambiar Nataka Mandram and staged two plays namely Kaviyin Kanavu and Kalyana Supermarket. In the screen, he would appear like a cruel and ruthless man but in originality he was a very pious man, pure vegetarian and teetotaler. Being a strong devotee of Sabarimala Sri Ayyappan, he had visited the temple more than 65 times in his life and so he was called Maha Guruswamy.

 

He has acted as hero in two films namely Kalyani and Kavitha. Both of them were produced by Modern Theatres. But he did not continue his acting career as a hero and switched back to villain character. He has performed in some television series also like Velan.

 

Some of the films that he has acted include Rojavanam, Poopparikka Varugirom, Vallal, Poove Unakkaga, Yejaman, Paasamalargal, Gentleman, Mella Thirandhathu Kadhavu, Naan Mahaan Alla, Thai Veedu, Thooral Ninnu Pochu, Vinnukkum Mannukkum, Winner, Baba, Uthama Puthiran, Aayirathil Oruvan, Thali Bhagyam, Enga Veettu Pillai, etc.

 

He married Rukmani. He has two sons and a daughter. His son Sukumaran Nambiar is a senior BJP leader and Mohanan Nambiar is a businessman in Coimbatore. His daughter’s name is Sneha Nambiar. He was suffering from age related ailments during the last few months of his survival. He died on 19th November 2008 in Chennai at the age of 89.
