M. Mukundan Biography

M. Mukundan is a noted writer of Malayalam, better known as a novelist and short story writer. He is regarded as one among the pioneers of modern Malayalam literature. He is better known by the name - Mayyazhiyude Kathakaaran (The story-teller of the village, Mayyazhi). Mayyazhi is his native village and it has been frequently used in most of his works. Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil, Daivathinte Vikrithikal, Appam Chudunna Kunkiyamma and Lesli Achante Kadangal are the best instances. In 1992, he received Kendra Sahitya Academy for his novel, Daivathinte Vikrithikal. His latest novels are Adithyanum Radhayum Mattu Chilarum, Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha, Kesavante Vilapangal and Nritham that have witnessed a change in structure and narration, as a substitute of time. Mayyazhippuzhayude Theerangalil is widely regarded as his magnus opus and in 2008, it was selected as the best novel published in the last 25 years.

 

Mukundan was born on 10 September 1942 in Mayyazhi. His first literary work was a short story published in 1961. Till now, he has published 12 novels and ten collections of short stories which include around 170 short stories. Oru Dalit Yuvathiyude Kadanakatha and Kesavante Vilapangal are among his recent works. Kesavante Vilapangal won the Vayalar Award in 2003. Ee Lokam Athiloru Manushyan bagged the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award. Kendra Sahitya academy award winning book - Daivathinte Vikrithikal has been made to a national award winning Malayalam feature film and has also been translated to English.

 

A few more published novels include - Kili Vannu Vilichappol, Delhi Gadhakal, Delhi, Aakashathinu Chuvattil, Aavilayile Sooryodayam, Pravasam and Seetha. His short story collections are Anchara Vayasulla Kutti, Thanner Kudiyante Thandu, Pavadayum Bikiniyum and Russia.His works also include a few translations and non-fiction work, Enthanu Aadhunikatha? published in 1976.
