M. M. Pallam Raju Biography

M. M. Pallam Raju is a senior political leader from Andhra Pradesh associated with Indian National Congress. A parliamentarian and former union minister, he served as Union Minister for Human Resources Development (28 October 2012 – 26 May 2014) and Union Minister of Defence (22 May 2009 – 27 October 2012) in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. Raju has been elected to parliament in the 9th, 14th and 15th Lok Sabha. He currently serves as an MP representing Kakinada constituency of Andhra Pradesh. Raju is the son of former parliamentarian and union minister, M.S. Sanjeevi Rao who was a member of Indira Gandhi’s ministry during 1982-1984.

 

Pallam Raju was born into a political family of Pithapuram, East Godavari of Andhra Pradesh. His grandfather, Mallipudi Pallam Raju was a freedom fighter. His father M.S. Sanjeevi Rao was a former parliamentarian and cabinet minister associated with Indian National Congress. Pallam Raju’s school education was completed at Hyderabad and Begumpet. Later he took his Electronics Engineering degree from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. He also completed his MBA from Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. Yet following his father’s footsteps he too reached political field and became an influential leader associated with Indian National Congress, similar to his father.

 

He worked in IT field in Philadelphia and Boston soon after completion of his studies in the 1980s. His entry into politics in the late 1980s was circumstantial, and was not supported by his family initially. He came to India in 1988 when his father had a stroke and decided to assume power of his father, as decided by the party. Thus he contested 1989 Lok Sabha elections and became the youngest parliamentarian of 9th Lok Sabha. He was only 27 then. Since then he completely switched on to his political career. Currently he served as an MP from Kakinada constituency.
