M. M. Jacob Biography

Mundakkal Mathew Jacob, popularly known as M. M. Jacob, is an Indian politician from Kerala. He has been appointed Governor of Meghalaya in 1995 and again in 2000 for a second term. He has acted as Governor of Arunachal Pradesh of 1996 for a short period. While a student, he has actively participated in Indian freedom struggle movement. As a member of the All India Students Federation, he took part in various students’ activities as a part of Indian freedom struggle movement. Jacob was drawn to social and political movements in the early fifties. He has been associated by Bharat Sevak Samaj and several social organizations as a part of social service and worked for Lok Karya Kshetras, Urban Social Welfare Projects, Slum Service Centres and night shelters during his active political period. He has played a leading role in the Cooperative Movement and was the Convener Sadachar Samithi for Kerala State.

 

He was born on August 9, 1928 at Ramapuram, Kottayam to Ulahanan Mathew and Rosamma Mundakkal as one among 5 children. His college education was completed at several colleges starting with University College, Thiruvananthapuram, Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Loyola College, Chennai and finally at Lucknow University. He did a course in social work in the University of Chicago. He held key positions in the college and university student bodies while his college days and took part in freedom struggle movement as well. Jacob enrolled as a lawyer in the High Court of Kerala in 1952.

 

As an active member of Indian National Congress, he has served different positions like General Secretary and Treasurer of Kerala Pradesh, Chairman, Kerala State Seva Dal board, Convener ideological cell Congress Party in Kerala and elected member of AICC. He published 'Bharat Sevak' a social workers' journal and was the Chief editor of 'Congress Review'. As Deputy Chairman Rajya Sabha, Shri Jacob attended the Commonwealth Parliament conference in London in 1986.
