M. L. Jaisimha Biography

Motganhalli Laxminarsu Jaisimha, shortly called M. L. Jaisimha was an Indian cricketer. He made his test debut at Lords in 1959. He was a right-handed batsman, an excellent fielder and a medium pace bowler. He got noticed by the media for his boyish good looks, the inimitable gait, the trademark silk shirt and scarf. The ‘sleeves buttoned at the wrist’ and the ‘collar turned up’ were his distinct trademarks and he was nick named as a 'cultivated stylist' by Indian cricket. Jaisimha made 2056 runs from 39 test matches and 13,516 runs from 245 first-class matches he played. He also took 431 first class wickets and 9 international test wickets. He passed away on 6 July 1999, Sanikpuri, Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh at the age of 60.


M. L. Jaisimha was born on 3 March 1939 in Secunderabad, British India. He made his first-class debut at the age of 15. He scored 90 runs in his maiden match he played in Hyderabad side. Very soon, his outstanding records as an all-rounder for the team earned him a seat in 1959 test matches played in England. He made his debut in Lords though his maiden performance was a disappointment. But his performance was noticed for the next two tests. He scored his first half century against Australia in 1959 at Kolkata. His batting at Kanpur against Pakistan got noticed when he stood on crease for 505 runs, but got run out at 99.

 
Later he became the opening batsman of Indian team and scored centuries against England and SL, batting in the top order. He played his last match against West Indies in 1970-71 and later concentrated on first class matches. He led Hyderabad for 16 seasons and 76 matches and has also served Indian team as a manager and selector.
