M. K. Narayanan Biography

M. K. Narayanan is the 24th and former Governor of West Bengal. He was formerly the country's third National Security Advisor (2005–2010) after the demise of his predecessor J. N. Dixit. M. K. Narayanan hails from Ottapalam, Palakkad. He headed the Joint Intelligence Committee and later the Intelligence Bureau from 1987 to 1990. Narayanan offered to resign on 30 November 2008 over the attacks in Mumbai that killed nearly 200 people. But Prime Minister didn’t accept his resignation. He was widely criticized for his poor administrative measures, related to this unfortunate event.

 

Narayanan was born on March 10, 1934 in Ottapalam, Palakkad. His graduation was completed at Loyola College, Chennai. After that he got married to Padmini Narayanan and had two kids. Their son-in-law Ajit Nambiar is Chairman and Managing Director of BPL Ltd. M. K. Narayanan joined the Indian Police Service in 1955 and passed out as the best student of the batch and worked for a short period as Sub-Divisional Police Officer in State of Madras. Later he went on deputation to the Intelligence Bureau in February 1959. Later he spent his whole career under Government of India, mainly in the Intelligence Bureau. He headed the Intelligence Bureau (IB) from 1987 to 1990, before heading the Joint Intelligence Committee. He became its Chief once again and remained in that post till his retirement in 1992. He was the Special Advisor for Internal Security to the Prime Minister of India since 2004.

 

He is alleged to plant his staunch supporters as RAW and IB chiefs and grew infamous related to the sack of the then RAW chief C. D. Sahay. On 24 Jan 2010 he became the governor of West Bengal and currently holds the same position.
