M. Buchi Babu Naidu Biography

M. Buchi Babu Naidu - the great patriarch of Madras cricket Naidu is considered the father of Madras (south Indian) cricket. His full name is Modhavarappu Dera Venkataswami Naidu. He was quite a popular figure of Chennai since the late 19th century, because of his figure as a socialite. A great lover of cricket he played a significant role in popularizing cricket in Madras during the British rule. He founded the annual Madras Presidency Matches, and also organized several cricket clubs for south Indians. Two of his sons have played test cricket with Indian national team - M. Baliah and C. Ramaswami. C. Ramaswami was a noted tennis player too. Only a few players excelled in tennis and cricket both in those days.

 

M. Buchi Babu Naidu was born in 1868. He was adopted by his maternal grandfather, Modhavarappu Dera Venkataswami Naidu, who led a social life and high standard of living. Naidu had 4 younger brothers and all the siblings were brought up in English tradition. Buchi Babu Naidu too followed the same tradition and led a socialite’s life. He had relationship with upper class society people as well as British.

 

Naidu founded the Madras United Club – a cricket club for Indian players. Till then cricket was known to be an English game. But Naidu later popularized among south Indians. Associated with Madras Cricket Club, he spotted budding talents and also coached many young players. He was responsible for bringing Ranjitsinjhi to Madras, one of the great Indian players of early days. Ranji Trophy was later instituted in his name. He founded the annual Madras Presidency Matches. But he passed away before the first match was played. He passed away in 1908.
