Leslie Lewis Biography

Leslie Lewis is an Indian musician most known for ‘pop album’ numbers. He along with playback singer Hariharan are together known as Colonial Cousins, successful duo of Indian pop music known for their fusion songs. Till 2003, he was most associated with remixes of Hindi hits and classical songs and later on, he concentrated on new compositions. Asha Bhosle’s Janam samjha karo, KK’s Pal, Alisha Chinoy’s Bombay Girl and Paree Hu Main of Suneetha Rao are also composed by Lewis. When he remixed R.D. Burman – Asha Bhosle combination songs, titled, Rahul and I, he became a household name. Asha Bhosle appeared in its music videos as well.

 

Leslie Peter Lewis, shortly known as Lezz is the son of Indian choreographer, P. L. Raj who has choreographed great actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Shammi Kapoor and Helen for landmark choreographed movies like Junglee, Teesri Manzil, Sholay, Professor, Don etc. While boarding at St Mary's High School, Mount Abu Lewis got exposed to the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Lewis soon began plucking guitar chords at the Cafe Royal, Oberoi Towers. Later he worked with renowned music composers like Laxmikanth-Pyarelal, R. D. Burman, Kalyanji Anandji and Louis Banks. In 1987, he launched a music company and worked on ad jingles. He received many awards from Indian Academy of Advertising Film Art.

 

As a music composer was Suneetha Rao’s Paree was one his earliest hits. His debut solo album was Haseena released in 1998. His association with Hariharan began in the year 1992 that resulted in Colonial Cousins. Their first album, Colonial Cousins was a fusion album and was the first Indian act to be featured on MTV Unplugged. It bagged many awards and was one of the chartbuster albums of year 1997. Next two successful scores were The Way We Do It (1998) and Aatma (2001). They have composed music for two Tamil movies - Modhi Vilayadu (2009) and Chikku Bukku (2010).
