Lata Mangeshkar Biography

Lata Mangeskar is famous singer from India. She was born on 28th September 1929 and started her career in 1942. She is in the singing industry for 64 long years. She has sung in thousands of Bollywood movies and has sung songs in more than 36 regional Indian languages and foreign languages. She has won the highest civilian honor of India, Bharat Ratna Award for her talent and contributions. She also got place in the Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for the highest number of recordings in the world. This is estimated to own more than 25,000 recordings.

Lata Mangeskar was born in Sikh Mohalla in Indore. Her parents are Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti. The name Mangeshkar denotes their native town Mangeshi in Goa. Her birthname was Hema. She is the eldest daughter of the family. Her siblings are Meena, Asha, Usha and Hridayanath. She took her music lessons from her father. When she was just 13 she lost her father. She was then under the care of Master Vinayak. She was introduced to Bollywood by Gulam Mohammed.

She moved to Mumbai in 1945. Her earlier years there were not very successful. Her first Hindi song was Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu. She and her sister Asha played minor roles in Hindi movies. She was tutored by Ushtad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ghulam Haider and Amanat Khan Devaswale. In 1958, she won Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for the song Aaja Re Pardesi in the film Madhumati.

She has worked with a number of music directors and song composers like Shankar-Jaikishan, Naushad, S. D. Burman, C. Ramchandra, Salil Chowdhury, Ravi, Vasant Desai, Hansraj Behl, Usha Khanna, Roshan and Sajjad Hussain. She also staged many concerts all over India and world. She also worked with Shiv-Hari, Ram Laxman and A. R. Rahman. She has won Dada Saheb Phalke Award, Padma Vibhushan Award, Padma Bhushan Award, four Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Awards and three National Film Awards. The state government of Madhya Pradesh has instituted Lata Mangeskar Award in her honor.
