Lalmohan Sen Biography

Lalmohan Sen was an Indian freedom fighter and revolutionary from Bengal who lived in the first half of the 20th century. He is best remembered for his participation in Chittagong Armoury Raid led by the famous revolutionary Surya Sen. Ganesh Ghosh, Lokenath Bal, Nirmal Sen, Ambika Chakrobarty, Pritilata Waddedar, Kalpana Dutta, Binod Bihari Chowdhury, Subodh Roy, Harigopal Bal etc were the major leaders who participated in the raid and Sen got arrested and jailed for 16 long years. Once released, he was killed by a Muslim mob in the infamous religious riot of 1946 shortly before Indian independence - Noakhali riots that occurred in the districts of Noakhali in the Chittagong Division of Bengal.

 

Lalmohan Sen was born in 1909 in Sandwip of Noakhali, Eastern Bengal. He was born into a Bengali Hindu business family. He did his schooling in Chittagong and later took medicine for higher studies. While at college, he got attracted by the revolutionary ideas of Surya Sen, and he too plunged into the revolutionary methods to achieve India’s freedom. On 18th April 1930, when Surya Sen led a group of revolutionaries to conduct the armory raid of police at Chittagong Lalmohan too joined the group. His task was to destroy the transport in Chittagong just before the operation, and he carried his mission successfully. Though the group captured arms, it failed to get the ammunition. Later they hoisted Indian flag in the premises before they left.

 

Massive raid was made by British later and they managed to trace the whereabouts of a few of the revolutionaries who participated in Chittagong armoury raid. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the incident, along with many of his friends. He spent his 16 years in Andaman Cellular Jail and other jails before got released in 1946 on parole. He joined the Communist Party of India after his release and returned to his hometown. However he was killed in the massive massacre led by Muslims, shortly after he reached his hometown. He lost his life while saving a few Hindus from Muslim mob. He was 37 then.
