Lalitha Sree is a popular character artist of south Indian cinema in the 1980s. Her first movie was as heroine with the great actor Kamal Hassan. It can said that she is the first heroine of this great actor. But unfortunately the movie was not released. Yet Lalitha Sree managed to earn fame and popularity from all south Indian language movies. She appeared in more than 460 films belonging to 6 languages and is lucky enough to dub herself for all the roles she played on screen. Noted film  actress Madhuri is her younger sister. ‘Adaminte Variyellu,' ‘Poochakkoru Mookkuthy’, ‘Ithiri Poove Chuvanna Poove,' and ‘Balram vs. Tharadas are some of her noted roles. She is married to Vijayasaradhi and has one adapted daughter.

Lalitha was born in Thiruvananthapuram, but shifted to Chennai. Subhadra is her original name. When she entered movies she didn’t take it serious. But later she recognized that more than to earn her a living, it’s more important to be dedicated to art. Devi Karumadiyamman was her debut movie. Later she did numerous roles belonging to different genres. 1984-1987 was the peak time of her career when she did more or less 35 movies a year. Like Tun Tun of Bollywood, her mannerisms, overweight and body language gave her numerous comic roles and a few negative shaded roles. But later roles started drying.

Lalitha Sree was the name of the residence where she lived. When production executive reached her home for the debut movie Devi Karumadiyamman, he misinterpreted her name to be Lalitha Sree and in those days, most of the artists had ‘Sree’ tag added to their names. She once decided to keep this name, as in appearance she was not so, due to her over weighted nature.
