Lalita D. Gupte Biography

Lalita D. Gupte is a business executive and retired Joint Managing Director of ICICI Bank – India’s second largest private sector bank. She is an iconic figure in Indian corporate world. She is currently the Chairperson on the Board of ICICI Venture and a board member of Nokia Corporation. She received Women of the Year Award (2002) by the International Women’s Association. The Women Achievers Award (2001) from the Women graduates’ Association and The twenty First Century for Banking Finance and Banking award (1997) by Ladies Wing of the Indian Merchants’ Chamber are other major honours received by her. She has been listed by the Fortune “as one of the fifty most powerful women in international business.” She played a significant role in listing ICICI in NYSE, the first Indian enterprise to reach this achievement.

 

Gupte completed Bachelor of economics and a Master's degree in Management Studies from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies before joining banking industry. Gupte had begun her career with ICICI Ltd in 1971 as a trainee in the Project Appraisal department. ICICI Ltd was later merged to ICICI bank. Later she served in different positions at many locations across the nation. As one of the powerful lady executives of ICICI group, she retired from ICICI Bank as a Joint Managing Director. She also played a pivotal role in the listing of ICICI share in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the second Asian Bank to do so.

 

She became joint MD of ICICI Bank in 2001 and played a significant role in the growth of the bank globally. She handled the areas of strategic planning, project finance, leasing, resources and treasury, and credit operations. She retired in 2006. She is a board member of NOKIA since 2007.
