Lalit Mansingh Biography

Lalit Mansingh is an IAS officer, who earlier served as a diplomat and Foreign Secretary of India, 1999–2000. He also served as ambassador of India to US in 2001 and also Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Lalit is the son of eminent Oriya poet, Mayadhar Mansingh – one of the great literal figures of 20th century. Lalit was earlier married to famous Odissi dancer, Sonal Mansingh – the daughter of social worker Poornima Arvind Pakvasa and granddaughter of Mangal Das Pakvasa. They are legally separated now.

 

Mansingh was born and brought up in Odisha into a literal family. His father Mayadhar Mansingh was a famous Oriya author and poet. He was born on 29 April 1941. His childhood days were spent in Nandala. He completed his Master’s degree in political science, and has been a Research scholar and Faculty for short period at School of International Studies (JNU). He was a lecturer of political science at Utkal University till he joined Indian Administrative Service in 1963. He was the topper of his batch. Since then he has served as an administrator and diplomat holding many senior positions.

 

He served as Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates during 1980-1983, High Commissioner to Nigeria during 1993–1995 and Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington, DC, 1989–1992. Director-General of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs are the other major positions held by him. He was awarded Kharavela Samman by Orissa Governor in February, 2009. Currently he serves as Diplomatic Advisor to FICCI and Chairman, FICCI India-US Policy Group.
