Lahiri Mahasaya Biography

Lahiri Mahasaya is regarded as one of the foremost Indian spiritual leaders who lived in Bengal in the 19th century. His real name is Shyama Charan Lahiri. He met his guru Mahavatar Babaji at the age of 33 while walking one day on Drongiri Mountain, in the Himalayan foothills. Yukteswar Giri was among his noted disciples. Quite contradictory to other yogis and saints, he led a family life apart from preaching the techniques of Kriya Yoga.

His autobiography was written by Paramahansa Yogananda, titled, ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’. This work made him popular in West. He is regarded as a seminal figure in the renaissance of Yoga in modern India. Though he established not even a single organization during his lifetime, he predicted that his essence will be felt after 50 years and his life history will be accounted by someone which will give rise to deep interest in Yoga in the West.

Born in 1828 in Nadia district of Bengal Province, he was deeply interested in meditation at the age of 3 or 4. His mother died as soon as he was born. Following a flood, his family moved to Varanasi when Lahiri was only 5.  He learnt many languages and Vedas at a young age. At the age of 18 he got married. He worked as an accountant in the Military Engineering Department of the English to support his family. Once he was posted at Ranikhet, which changed his life forever. He met his guru Mahavatar Babaji who initiated him into the techniques of Kriya Yoga. He also told him that it’s his mission to propagate this extinguished form of Yoga and as his mission, throughout his life he initiated many people from different faiths into the ancient Indian art of Kriya Yoga.
