L. P. R. Varma Biography

Lakshmipuram Palace Pooram Thirunal Ravi Varma, shortly called L. P. R. Varma was a musician, actor and writer from the Parappanad royal family settled at Changanassery, Kottayam. He is a member of 'Thekkumkoor Dynasty', famous for leading Malayalam writers like Kerala Varma Valia Koi Thampuran and A. R. Raja Raja Varma. Best known as a Carnatic musician he has composed songs for more than 50 films, devotional albums and dramas. This carnatic Music exponent has conducted large number of carnatic Music concerts all over Kerala and other places.

 

He received Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award for Classical Music in 1978. He is also a recipient of Kerala Government Award for Music Composition in Professional Drama for the year 1985. L. P. R. Varma Foundation was established in his memory 9 years after his death and 'Sangeetha Ratnakara Award' was initiated in his name. Music maestro K. J. Yesudas was the first recipient of this award.

 

Varma was born in 1926 at Lakshmi Puram Palace at 'Puzhavath' in Changanassery Taluk of Kottayam District. Vasudevan Nampoothirippad and Mangalabhai Thampuratty were his parents. He completed schooling from Changanassery Perunna N. S. S. High School. Later he joined Thiruvanathapuram Swathi Thirunal Music College to study music and passed out 'Gana Bhooshanam' course in Carnatic Music. He completed the course at the age of 20 and started doing music concerts at this age itself. Very soon he became one of the established names of this field.

 

In addition to music concerts, he set off his journey as a music composer. He was closely associated with Malayalam Theater and one of the most sought names during the glorifying era of Indian theater. He has composed songs for leading professional troupes like 'Kerala Theaters' and K.P.A.C. Drama troupes and many of his songs are immensely popular till now. He composed more than 50 film songs which include - Sthree Hridayam, Sthanarthi Saramma, Ollathu Mathi, Kudumbini, Sandhya Vandanam, Mayor Nair, Thottavadi etc.  Sthree Hridayam – was his debut film as a music director.
