Kuttyedathi Vilasini Biography

Kuttyedathi Vilasini is a noted character artist of Malayalam cinema and theatre. This veteran actress has been conferred the first Bharat Murali Puraskar, instituted by Bahrain Kerala Samajam. Nadaka Prathibha Award by UDA and Nilambur Balan award, both for the year 2011 are the major awards received by her. In 1976, she received Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actress for the movie, Dweepu. ‘Kuttyedathi’ (literal meaning - Sister Kutty) is the name of a movie in which she acted in 1971, scripted by M. T. Vasudevan Nair. This movie is regarded as one of the best south Indian movies in the decade of 1970’s and her lead and pivot role as Malu (Kuttiyedathi) got noticed. After this movie release, ‘Kuttyedathi’ tag got permanently added to Vilasini’s name.

 

Vilasini belongs to Thrissur, Kerala. She entered film field in the mid-1960’s doing supporting roles. Thacholi Othenan (1964), Kunhali Marakkar(1967), Aalmaram (1969) and Kadalpalam (1969) are among her noted roles during 1960’s. In 1971, she got the lead role in the highly acclaimed movie, ‘Kuttyedathi’ directed by P. N. Menon. But later on, she received supporting roles in movies. She played the role of less-glamorous girl named Malu with tomboyish tendencies.

 

In a career spanning to more than 50 years, she appeared in 140 films and over 4,000 dramas. Chukku, Panimudakku, Taxi driver, Appunni, Sukritham, Ore Thooval Pakshikal, Rithubedam, Ponmudi, Oraal Koodi, Ganam, Choondakari, Kodiyettam, Angadi, Yavanika and Kummatti are other noted movie appearances. She has given equal preference to theater as well as cinema and has appeared both in mainstream and offbeat movies.
