Kunjunni Mash Biography

Kunjunni Mash was a very popular poet of Malayalam known for his philosophical thoughts and children’s poems. He is regarded as a children's poet and his poems are short and simple, yet filled with a complete message. He has received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award (1987), Kerala Sahitya Akademi Lifetime Achievement Award (1988), Vazhakunnuam Award (2002), V.A. Kesavan Nair Award (2003) and State Institute of Children's Literature Award (1982). Kunjunni is his real time and people add ‘Mash’ tag to his name as a sign of respect. Mash in Thrissur Malayalam language means ‘Sir’, ‘Teacher’ etc. His autobiography is titled ‘Enniloode’ known for the humour sense and simple writing style of this popular poet. Though his poems were simple, they are enough to evoke complex thoughts.

 

Kunjunni was born in the village of Valapad in Thrissur on May 10, 1927. His parents were Njayapilly Illathu Neelakantan Moosath and Athiyarathu Narayani Amma. Kunjunni Mash was a teacher by profession and started his career at the Chelari School. He joined Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama High School in Kozhikode in 1953. He retired in the year 1982, yet continued to live in the ashram leading a simple life. Due to health problems, he returned to his native village in 1987 and became involved in social and cultural activities. Kunjunni handled the column for children in the Mathrubhumi weekly under the pseudonym "Kuttettan". He has also inspired a lot of young people to join poetry field, about four generation.  

 

His major works include - Kunjunniyude Kavithakal, Kadankathal, Kutti Pencil, Kadalippazham, Nonsense Kavithakal, Aksharathettu, Undanum Undiyum, Kalikoppu, Kunjunni Ramayanam, Kalikkalam, Oonu Thotturakkam Vare, Muthumani, Chakkarappava, Kuttikal Padunnu, Pazhamozhi Pathayam, Namboodiri Phalithangal, Raashthriyam, Pathinanchum Pathinanchum, Pazhanchollukal and Vithum Muthum. He created his own style, combining form, content, language and rhythm in a unique and compact fashion. He received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 1987 for Kunjunni Kavithakal. He died on 26 March 2006 at Thrissur, aged 78.
